PHIXER for Stems: stem / stem-bus phase when combining multi-track stems
A drum stem, vocal stem, or guitar group can sound huge soloed. Combined on the stem bus or against the print, kick body, vocal chest, or low guitar disappears on phone, club, broadcast, or LoRo fold. Stems fight each other and they fight the 2-mix. Polarity, timing, parallel crush, and stereo FX on each stem come first. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on stereo stems you must keep stereo. It is not a stem loudness tool, and it does not replace a true mono listen after stems are combined.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a stem loudness tool, not a widener, not a downmix matrix, and not a substitute for bus gain structure or mono audition after combining multi-track stems. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on stereo stems you must keep stereo.
Three stem / stem-bus failure modes this page covers
- Multi-track stems that cancel when combined. Drum, vocal, and guitar stems that were fine soloed hollow the middle when the stem bus or client sums them. Deep checklist: Stem bus / stem delivery phase.
- Parallel crush / dry-plus-smash printed into a stem. Latency or invert vs dry that cancels body when stems meet. Cousin: Parallel compression / bus phase and PHIXER for Parallel Bus.
- Stem stacks next to surround fold or stereo FX returns. Combining stems then folding 5.1/7.1 or stacking wide reverb returns piles more cancel under mono. Cousins: Surround Fold-Down and Reverb Returns.
Fast stem-bus mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Solo the stem bus (or load the delivery stems alone). Sum L+R with a monitor controller or utility. Do not mute one side to "hear the problem."
- A/B stereo vs mono across a sustained soft source and a transient. Note what disappears: kick body, snare shell, vocal chest, low guitar.
- Solo subgroups inside the bus (kick+bass, OH+rooms, doubles). Find which pair collapses. Flip Ø on one stem or one side if body returns immediately. Then nudge a few samples of attack timing before chasing plugins.
- Confirm on a phone speaker, then again after bus EQ / compressor / reverb send. Re-check after parallel crush, surround fold, or stereo FX returns join the stem stack.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono listen after stems are combined
Hard L+R sum with both ears open on the stem bus or the client sum. Habit: mono check workflow.
2. Stem labeling and FX-print hygiene
If mono scoops only when wet FX are printed twice, or when a stem already includes content from another stem, fix the delivery package first. Labeling mistakes are not free stereo.
3. Polarity before more processing
Flip Ø on one stem or one folded side while mono. Keep the flip that returns body. Guide: polarity vs phase.
4. Attack timing before spectral tools
Nudge a few samples or ms so transient peaks agree across L and R of the stem or between near-copy stems. Often enough on phones and club fold.
5. Parallel crush and stereo FX before spectral tools
Mute parallel crush or wide returns briefly. If mono weight returns, fix latency / invert / print choices on that path. Cousins: Parallel bus and Reverb returns.
6. Skip when intentional thin mono is the point
Some Side-heavy stem stacks are meant to stay edge-only in mono. Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
7. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If stereo stems must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Stem setups and common mono failures
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Drum stem + music stems | Kick / snare body dips when stems combine | Mono listen; check OH/rooms and Ø |
| Vocal stem + doubles / throws | Chest thins when music stems return | Solo doubles; polarity and timing |
| Guitar / synth stem + bass print | Low guitar fights bass on fold | Check dual-cab / unison width; Ø |
| Parallel crush printed into stem | Dry plus smash cancels on fold | Parallel bus guide |
| Stereo FX returns on stem bus | Wide reverb hollows mid on phone | Reverb returns use-case |
| Stems into surround / LoRo fold | Center body dips after 5.1/7.1 fold | Surround fold-down |
| Delivery stems vs printmaster | Session OK, stems hollow for client | Audition stems alone; label / FX-print hygiene |
| Master-bus width after stem sum | Streaming / phone fold thins | Mono check master; less width |
Surround, parallel, and reverb cousins (short version)
- Surround stereo folds share center cancel with stem stacks when one fold side or Side is wrong. Full write-up: PHIXER for Surround Fold-Down.
- Parallel crush and dry-plus-smash printed into stems share the same mono scoop as a stereo parallel blend. Full write-ups: Parallel bus guide and PHIXER for Parallel Bus.
- Stereo reverb / FX returns on the stem bus share mid scoop on phone fold. Full write-up: PHIXER for Reverb Returns.
- Polarity and attack timing still come first on every cousin. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only.
When not to reach for PHIXER
- Stem labeling or FX-print choices are simply wrong (fix the package first).
- Wrong polarity on one stem or one folded channel (flip Ø first).
- Obvious attack misalignment between near-copy stems (nudge first).
- You only need a mono-safe center print, not stereo stems.
- Intentional Side-heavy texture that is meant to stay thin in mono.
- Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
